How a Website Audit Can Help Your Business

Your website is often the first point of contact made between your business and potential customers. It is no surprise then that many organizations, from the largest corporation to the smallest business, spend a sizable fraction of their marketing budget to develop an attractive, effective, and user friendly website. If your website is not as successful as you had hoped, it is probably time to speak to an internet marketing professional about a website audit. A website review and analysis can help your business because it is a comprehensive review of the structure and usability of your site that will ultimately offer some useful recommendations to improve conversion rates.

What is a Website Audit?

Before we get into the details of how an audit will help your site, we should spend some time defining a website audit. In its simplest terms, a website audit involves a professional review of your website to determine ways you can improve conversion of website visitors to customers. Ultimately, it should help you increase sales and revenue by motivating site visitors to take action. During an audit, your web development professional will conduct a comprehensive review that includes:

Reviewing your site to ensure your branding is accurately reflected,

  1.     Reviewing your website position on major search engines,
  2.     Tracking website visitors and conversion rates,
  3.     Analyzing link popularity,
  4.     A competitor’s comparative review,
  5.     Reviewing website navigation and architecture, and
  6.     A browser compatibility check.

Ultimately, the goal of your website review is to come up with a list of recommendations to ensure that your company, products/services, and website are aligned in such a way that you can more effectively turn website visitors into customers. Branding, search engine ranking, conversion rates, link popularity, understanding competitor strengths and weaknesses, website functionality, and browser compatibility are all crucial aspects of creating an effective website.

Benefits of a Website Audit for your Business

One of the greatest benefits of a website audit is that a professional auditor will be reviewing your website from a customer’s perspective. Ideally, your auditor will have proven experience in developing highly effective websites, but s/he should also be in a position to independently review your website. An auditor can look at your site with an open mind and should be able to give you concrete suggestions for improving the effectiveness of your site.

Still, the most important benefit of a website audit is that it can have a real impact on company revenue. Especially for sites that have not been checked for an extended period of time, a website analysis not only ensures your site is compatible with the latest online technologies, but that all aspects of your site function harmoniously. Moreover, you’ll gain new insights on strategies and techniques for building a larger customer base.

Google Penguin Algorithm Now Live

The latest web spam algorithmic update from Google has been named Penguin and it is now live. Update was released to improve quality of organic search engine results. Unfortunately, some users who used “white hat” search engine optimization may experience search rankings incorrectly affected by this update and some spam may even be missed. As such, Google has announced a feedback form to identify spam or to identify sites that are incorrectly labelled as spam.

By filling out a spam report, you can notify Google of spam that is missing. According to a recent Tweet by Matt Cutts, the engineer who leads the web spam team, fill out the spam report and add the word “penguin.” Alternatively, if you see a site being incorrectly affected by this spam update, Google has also created a form to provide feedback.

On their feedback form, Google will ask you to provide a series of details about the affected page. The algorithmic update to their web spam filters was launched on April 24th in order to better track websites that rely on black-hat tactics for improving website visibility. Any sites that rely on keyword stuffing, cloaking, link schemes or other violations of Google’s webmaster guidelines are identified as spam. On the feedback form, Google requests the URL of pages impacted by the update as well as a query that shows flawed results while also providing a section for additional comments.

After last year’s Panda launch, Google created a Webmaster Central forum for sites affected by the algorithm change; similarly, this form for the Penguin update is meant to offer a feedback platform while avoiding receiving thousands of responses and complaints on a Webmaster Central thread. Indeed, already Google has likely been inundated with complaints as apparent on Google’s blog posts filling up with comments indicating that reputable sits have been demoted or worse in search rankings.

As far as the name for the update is concerned, many have speculated it is related to the fact that the algorithm update went live one day before World Penguin Day. Some have even suggested that Google’s 2011 Earth Day Doodle may provide insight into future names for algorithmic updates.
